Challenges

School districts in Yunnan face challenges getting students from farm communities, who belong to ethnic minority groups to attend elementary and middle school. Another issue facing the school and families is that there are are fees attached to middle school education; however, in this region it is possible to apply for school subsidies.

To assist with students in more remote hilly areas, one local middle school offers boarding options to address transportation and logistical issues. However, overcoming the traditional view of children following in the footsteps of their parents is critical to change, according to school officials and teachers.
One organization dedicated to inspiring students to stay at school using intercultural education is the Yunnan Ethnic Minority School Volunteer Project (YEMS).
